Granville NY — Charles Nathan Ayers, 72, passed away on December 31, 2018, surrounded by his family.

Charles Nathan Ayers

Born March 29, 1946 in Granville, New York he was the son of Walter & Emma (Crouch) Ayers. He grew up in Rupert, VT and attended school at Washington Academy in Salem, NY. He married his wife Norma in 1963.

Charles was an entrepreneur. He purchased Hooper Insulation in 1975 which he owned and operated for 35 years. He had several other businesses: delivering sawdust to local farmers; managing Granville Lumber, farming on Taylor Hill: converting his land on Aiken Lane to a driving range which eventually became Mettowee Par 3 Golf Course. With all of this he created employment for many and created lasting relationships.

Charles was fair, hardworking, and never quit. His goals were always to provide the best for his family and took great pride in his home. His children remember the yearly vacations in Maine, a place he and Norma fell in love with.

In retirement Charles would be seen driving around in his white Dodge with “Hooper Insulation” on the side, having coffee at Scotties, getting his lunch at Chapmans and at the golf course keeping an eye on things. He enjoyed life.

He is predeceased by his parents Walter & Emma Ayers, his wife Norma of 52 years, brothers Walter & Thomas, and sister Dorothy.

GRANVILLE, NY – Patricia Ann Smith passed peacefully into the loving arms of her Lord on May 2, 2018 surrounded by her loving family.

Patricia was the daughter of Harold and Grace Rathbun of Granville and sister to Marie Williams of Granville and Christine Keating of Queensbury, New York.

As an extraordinary wife to Gordon B Smith (deceased), mother to 8 children, grandmother to 22 and great grandmother to 25, her love and guidance was our blessing.

Patricia graduated as Class of 1949 Salutatorian, Granville Central High School. Her early adult years were dedicated to her family, raising 8 kind and honorable children. Mrs. Eileen (John) Heslin of Queensbury New York, Mr. Gordon B. (Michele) Smith of Granville, Mr. Michael Smith of Lake George, Mr. Keven (Nancy) Smith of Whitehall, Mr. Dennis(Karen) Smith of Granville, Mr. Timothy (Mary Jo) Smith of Whitehall, Mrs. Colleen(John) Bates of Wells Vermont and Mrs. Maureen (Walter) Bishop of Granville. Her 22 grandchildren include, Patricia Heslin, Johnna Heslin, Mrs. Megan (Jason) Humphries, Mr. Peter (Kristen) Smith, Meghan (Todd) Haviland, Kaitlin(Mark) Goodwin, Ryan Smith, Brendan(Samantha) Smith, Jodi(Greg) Austin, Stephen Brooks, Melissa (Scott) Brown, Kaylie Smith and fiancé Scott Fowler, Chanyia Newton, Michael (Bianca) Newton, Justin(Shana) Charpentier, Jeromy Smith , Joshua Smith, Taylor (Solei) St. Claire, Jordan(Allie) St. Claire, Luc St. Claire, Adam (Amanda) Bates, Matthew Bishop. Besides her parents, Patricia was predeceased by one grandson Gregory P. Smith. She also has 25 great-grandchildren.

Patricia was employed by Washington County Social Services Administration as a Principal Account Clerk through the years 1973 to 1989. She loved her bowling Tuesday nights; was an avid reader and NY Times Crossword puzzle expert. She served her community as a volunteer in the early years of the Granville Rescue Squad when calls were received in DeVecchi’s garage and a brown hearse served as its ambulance. Anne Hatch Rathbun and Joan Tuttle were her duty mates.

Perhaps Patricia’s greatest spirit was shown by her remarkable love and concern for others. All who knew Pat will remember her as a dignified lady with a heart capable of great love and compassion. Kindness was her very soul. She would celebrate all your joys and cry with all your pain. Everyone was her dear friend and all children needed her love. She possessed a unique gift to comfort the sorrowful and lift each person’s spirit. Her beautiful brown eyes and warm smile reached out to everyone.

Our gratitude extends to the caring people of the Slate Valley Center who loved Pat and cared for her throughout her last years. As well as her special visits from her dear friends Patty Perry and Gail Nelson.

Calling hours will be at the Robert M. King Funeral Home, 23 Church St., Granville on Monday, May 7, 2018 from 4-7pm and Tuesday, May 8, 2018 from 12 to 1pm with funeral services at the funeral home beginning at 1pm. Reverend Tom Zelker will officiate, and interment will follow at the Mount Carmel Cemetery, Middle Granville, New York. GRANVILLE, NY – Richard Anthony Freed, 94, of Naples, Florida, formerly of Granville, passed away on May 1st, in the company of his daughters, Martha Demick and Patricia Williams. He was born on February 2, 1924 in Providence, Rhode Island, the fourth of five sons born to Francis and Annie (Cafferty) Freed. As a young boy, one of his favorite activities was to wait at the trolley stops on Elmwood Avenue and ask passengers for their unused passes. He would then use the pass to ride around the city on the weekend and he never lost this vagabond spirit, which later in life earned him the title of “the happy wanderer”, He loved the Boston Red Sox, and even though the 1946, 1967, 1975 and 1986 World Series losses made him think he would die before he ever saw them become champions, the new millennium brought him three World Series victories that he would relish. He was also a long time tennis player, having learned the sport from his wife Alice, who was an excellent player in her youth.

Richard Anthony Freed graduated from LaSalle Academy in Providence in 1942 and, with war breaking out all over the world, enlisted in the United States Merchant Marine. This led to him serving in both the Pacific and European theaters and surviving both the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944 and the sinking of his ship. He returned from the war, graduated from Bryant College in 1948 and married his childhood sweetheart, Alice Livesey, whom he had known since grade school, that same year on March 29, 1948. Richard and Alice Freed moved to Woodstock, Vermont, in 1956 and then to Granville, New York, in 1959, when he and Alice purchased Granville Gasoline and Oil Company from the Munson family and grew it, together with sons Walter and Richard, into Johnsons Fuel Service and then Apollo Industries over the next 40 years while they also guided the growth of their family. Richard served several community organizations, including as a founding member of the Granville Lion’s Club (and a past President), a member of St. Mary’s Church and the Knights of Columbus, and a member of the Board of Directors of the former Emma Laing Stevens Hospital, to name but a few. In retirement, he continued his commitment to service by volunteering for two years, in Bulgaria, in the Peace Corps.

Richard Anthony Freed was fond of history and wrote a novel entitled The Missing Polar Bears, about the 1918 invasion of Russia by American forces at the end of World War I, and spent years searching for the remains of his uncle who was killed in battle in 1918. He was known to all by his sense of humor and kindness. When asked, at the age of 84, if he had plans for the day, he said “I plan to go outside and listen to the birds. If I can hear them, I know my hearing aid is working.” He kept a journal of his life, and on the front cover he wrote this poem to provide a final blessing to us all.

The light of night rests easily on the burdened traveler.

Would you say of me that I felt not what hurt you most?

And when the last vintage of man’s day is gone
