William Smith Linendoll

NORTH GRANVILLE NY

– William Smith Linendoll, 89, a resident of North Granville, N.Y., and formerly of Salem, passed away Thursday, 5 Jan 2012, at Glens Falls Hospital.

William was born in Argyle, N.Y. on Dec. 17, 1922, the son of Douw and Mabel (Bussing) Linendoll.

He attended Salem, N.Y., schools and was a graduate of Salem High School.

William served his country as a member of the Army Air Corps during World War II.

Upon being honorably discharged, William worked as a machinist and a tool and dye maker for Telescope Furniture in Granville. He later owned and operated a Mobil Service Station in Salem, N.Y., was a Washington County Sheriff’s deputy for 34 years and worked as a fireman for the Salem Volunteer Fire Department as assistant chief. William was also a member of the Salem Rescue Squad, and retired as street commissioner in Salem.

William enjoyed camping, fishing, NASCAR racing, playing Hawaiian guitars with his wife Katherine and loved following the Atlanta Braves baseball team.

Survivors

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, the former Katherine Littlefield of North Granville, whom he married in Poultney, Vt., on July 6, 1943; his children, William Linendoll Jr. and his wife, Sharon, of North Carolina, Gerald Linendoll and his wife, Zadie, of South Carolina, Randy Linendoll and his wife, Brenda, of Gansevoort, N.Y., Barry Linendoll of Hunter Mountain, N.Y., Brent Linendoll of North Granville, N.Y., Sandra Whitney and her husband, Richard, of South Carolina, and Nancy Linendoll of Tennessee; his sister, Orpha Crosier of Greenwich, N.Y.; 17 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; in addition to many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Brothers Floyd and Albert Linendoll predeceased William, as did sisters, Irene Gilbar and Mildred Stewart.

Funeral services for William happened at 1 p.m.  Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2012, at Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, 213 W. Main St., Bennington, Vt.
