Queensbury, NY – Ruth Margaret (Conlin) Karpeles, 93, passed away at Home of the Good Shepherd in Saratoga Springs on Tuesday, December 6, 2022, after a brave battle with Alzheimer’s.

Born in Glens Falls on February 27, 1929, she was the daughter of John L. Conlin and Catherine (Dempsey) Conlin.

Ruth graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in Glens Falls in 1947. She graduated from Our Lady of the Elms College in Chicopee, MA in 1951 with a BA in English Literature.

Ruth married Robert Karpeles of Glens Falls in 1951. Following Bob’s time spent in the US Army Corp of Engineers and the Korean conflict, the couple settled into raising their family.

Bob’s extensive career in the paper industry led them to several locations over the years; Wisconsin, Maine and Canada, although for many years it was in Milford, NJ where they raised their three children. Ruth was primarily a homemaker but worked for a short time selling real estate. She was active in the “Ridge Players”, acting in Little Theatre Productions.

In 1992, upon Bob’s retirement, the couple relocated to Queensbury, NY. They enjoyed skiing for many years at Gore Mountain with the GOOFS (Gore Organization of Frequent Skiers), and golfing as members of the Glens Falls Country Club for 18 years. They also traveled extensively, including trips to Australia and New Zealand, a tour of European countries, Egypt and Israel, an African Safari, and ski trips to the Italian Alps, Utah, and Colorado.

Ruth volunteered her time to many organizations over the years. This included Glens Falls Hospital, Literacy Volunteers, the Open Door Soup Kitchen, Meals on Wheels, and as a Eucharistic Minister at Our Lady of Annunciation Church in Queensbury. She was also a communicant at St. Mary’s Parish in Glens Falls.

In addition to her parents, Ruth was predeceased by Robert, her beloved husband of 70 years, and her sister, Mary Hamelin. Those left to cherish her memory include her three children: Carol (John) Prazan of Scappoose, OR, Nancy (Arthur) Marocco of Queensbury, NY, and Boynton Beach, FL, David (Linda) Karpeles of Mesa, AZ; five grandchildren: Kelly Martinez, Drew Karpeles, David Machell, Kelcie Imhoff and Sam Karpeles; five great-grandchildren: Scarlett Machell, Hunter Machell, Edward Martinez, Bella Imhoff and Lucy Imhoff; as well as several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Ruth will be held Thursday, June 15, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Glens Falls, NY.

Burial for Ruth, alongside her husband, Robert, will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in South Glens Falls. Military honors will be performed for Robert.

The family wishes to extend a sincere thank you to the staff at Home of the Good Shepherd for their loving care of Ruth.

In loving memory of Ruth, contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 62 Warren St., Glens Falls, NY 12801.

Thomas M. Jacobs

Thomas M Jacobs  passed in the comfort of his home. Tom was born August 14, 1926 in Montreal, Canada, to Minna Wagner Jacobs and Milton Jacobs. Soon after his birth, he moved with his family to Berlin, New Hampshire. Tom graduated from Gould Academy in Bethel, Maine in 1944. He served in the U.S. Army in Okinawa and Japan from 1945 to 1947. In August 1949, Tom married a Middlebury College classmate, Marilyn Mulholland of Wellsville, New York. In 1951 he graduated with honors from Middlebury where he majored in Geology.

Tom went to the University of Colorado at Boulder to do graduate work in geology. Selection and participation in the 1952 Olympic Games in Oslo, Norway, disrupted his studies; he returned to the university as ski coach instead of student. During his tenure as ski coach, he served as chairman of the NCAA committee on skiing and authored the NCAA rules for skiing. After coaching, Tom became the Executive Director of the National Ski Association in Denver, Colorado, and a year as director of the Steamboat Springs Chamber of Commerce and Winter Sports Club. In 1958, Tom moved his family back to Glens Falls where he was employed by Finch & Pruyn Paper Company as a sales representative for eleven years.

From early childhood Tom was an avid skier and was proficient in all four disciplines of ski racing, including slalom, downhill, cross country and jumping. He had competed successfully all through high school and college, winning skimeister trophies for his four-event prowess, and was on the Middlebury team that won the 1948 National Collegiate Championships. At the 1952 Olympics, he competed in the Nordic Combined events of cross county and jumping. He continued his passion for skiing by filling many niches in ski sport and the ski industry both locally and internationally. Tom and Marilyn were owners of the Inside Edge Ski and Bike shop and a catalog business Reliable Racing Supply, now owned by their son John Jacobs. Tom founded the ski school at West Mountain, the Southern Adirondack Racing League and the Friends of Coles Woods. His many contributions to the sport and the industry led to his being inducted to the National Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame in 2007.

Tom was predeceased by a sister, Louise Jacobs Richter. He is survived by his wife Marilyn; his son Jeffrey Jacobs of Boise, Idaho; his daughter Diana Joaquin of Richmond, Virginia; and his son John (Susan Ide) Jacobs of Glens Falls. Surviving also are seven grandchildren: Jocelin (Jason) Kaplan; Courtney (Ernest) Quackenbush; Thembi (Jamal) Butler; Zuri (Justin) Brown; Jena Jacobs; John “Jake” Jacobs; Hannah (Thye) Bain; and twelve great grandchildren.

The family wishes to sincerely thank High Peaks Hospice for their care and professionalism throughout Tom’s last days. In lieu of flowers and in memory of Tom, the family requests that donations be made to The Friends of Coles Woods, P.O. Box 294, Glens Falls, NY.

HUDSON FALLS, NY

— Lloyd H Burch passed away unexpectedly at his home in Hudson Falls on Saturday, August 18, 2018. He was seventy five years old.

Survivors

Lloyd is survived by his wife, Linda (Underwood) Burch, of Hudson Falls; his sons, Gregory of Hudson Falls, and Brandon (Jessica) of Fort Edward; his daughter, Rebecca of Oswego, NY; two brothers, Larry (Janet) and Wayne (Karin) Burch; and sister, Mary Ann Germain. He is also survived by his wife’s family; Louise (John) DeSare, Keith (Marian) Underwood, Karen Phetteplace, Bill (Penny) Underwood, Wayne (Phyllis) Underwood, Daniel (Joanne) Underwood, Diane (Bob) Michelucci, Bette Shaw, Barb (Clemente) Amelio, and Tim Underwood. Lloyd is also survived by former daughter-in-law Heather and dozens of nieces and nephews.

Lloyd is preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Wilfred Burch; and his sister, Jane Mattison.

Lloyd H Burch was born December 4, 1942, in Kingsbury to Herbert and Ethel Burch. He often told the story of how he was such an adorable child that strangers offered to purchase him. He served in the 503rd Army Corps of Engineers and built structures and playing fields for children throughout Germany. In 1967, he returned to the US and started work at Ideal Dairy Farms in Hudson Falls. He was introduced to Linda Underwood (who lived next door) by her brother William and proposed to her on their second date. They wed on January 11, 1969 and they were married for 49 years.

He had other jobs throughout his life but worked at Great Meadow Correctional Facility for 22 years. He retired in 2006. He loved hunting with his brother, Larry, his sons, and his grandchildren. He loved going to camp, reading mysteries (he would laugh until he cried reading Janet Evanovich books), driving around in his VW Thing, and puttering in his tool shed. He was generous and kind, helping his neighbors and friends with everything from mowing lawns to camp repairs to cutting firewood. He loved to tell stories and would joke around for hours.  He loved people. He would talk to anyone about anything, which made shopping and running errands very long and difficult for his family. By far, his greatest joys in his life were his grandchildren Devin, Jessie, and Lucas Burch. He adored them and they were the center of his world. He took great delight in teaching them naughty things.

Calling hours are scheduled for Friday, Aug. 24 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Baker Funeral Home, 11 Lafayette St., Queensbury, NY 12804.

A memorial service will follow at 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

A graveside service with military honors will be held on Monday, Aug. 27 at 12:30 p.m. at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Rd., Schuylerville, NY 12871

The family would like to thank everyone for their kind words and condolences. Lloyd would have been so touched to know how much he was loved.

In lieu of flowers, if you wish to make a donation in memory of Lloyd, please send to Newcomb Sportsman’s Club in care of Walter Huba, 18 Cimarron Way, Latham, NY 12110-1948.
