Wallace, North Carolina – Bertie Eunice Cavenaugh Gilbert, 90, of Rose Hill left this earthly life for her eternal rest on Thursday, February 23, 2023.

She was born on November 18, 1932 in Duplin County and was the daughter of the late Isaiah and Florence Cavenaugh.  She was also predeceased by her loving husband, Roy Gilbert; her son Dean Gilbert and grandson Shane Cavenaugh; siblings,Aubrey Cavenaugh, Vergie Profitt and John David Cavenaugh. 

Surviving to cherish her memory are her children, Shirley Wheeler of Rose Hill, Mary Lou Cavenaugh and husband Butch of Wallace, Roy Alan Gilbert of Rose Hill and William Earl Gilbert of Ashville; grandchildren, Brandy Gilbert, Sarah Smith, Andrew Smith, Anthony Smith and William Gilbert; great grandchildren, Payton Cavenaugh, Gabriel Smith, Dominic Smith, Christian Smith, Andi Smith, Aron Smith and Jonathan Gilbert; great-great granddaughter, Magnolia Jean “Sissy” Cavenaugh; siblings, Annie Pearl Bray of Wallace, Ray Cavenaugh and wife Mary Lou of Wallace and Aaron Cavenaugh and wife Jeannie of Wallace; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends that loved Bertie dearly.  

Bertie was a loving mother and caring grandmother who loved her family dearly.  She was a simple woman who enjoyed simple things such as crocheting, shopping and cooking.  Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family.  Bertie especially enjoyed visiting with Ray at his barn and Aaron at the antique store.  She loved to cook and was a great cook.  Her apple jacks were the best around,  Bertie loved people and was loved in return.  She will surely be missed but treasured memories will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. 

Graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, February 27, 2023 at Cavenaugh’s Cemetery on NC Hwy 41, Wallace, NC with Reverend Ray Kennedy officiating the service. The family will greet friends after the service at the cemetery.  

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home, PO Box 339, Wallace, NC  28466  to help with funeral expenses for Bertie.

Wilmington, NC – Yvonne Inez Pollard, age 73, of Wilmington, passed away Friday, February 3, 2023.

A memorial service celebrating Mrs. Pollard’s life will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Friday, February 10, 2023 at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, 719 Walnut St., Wilmington, NC 28401.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Rayford “Hamburger” Thompson.

Her love and memories will remain in the heart of her husband, James E. Pollard, Jr. of the home; daughters, Ronita Devane-Smith (Nicole) of Leland, Acquenetta “Sissy” Devane (Pete) of Raleigh and Benjetta Rexroad of Myrtle Beach, SC; sister, Chrisanne Thompson of Wilmington, six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The family requests all floral donations be made in Mrs. Pollard’s memory to New Hanover County Senior Resource Center, 2222 South College Road, Wilmington, NC 28403. All other donations can be sent to 2325 Cottagefield Lane, Leland, NC 28451.

Garner North Carolina – Alonzo Daniel Stephenson, 90, passed away Wednesday at Wake Med Cary. Born in Harnett County, he was the son of the late Ingham S. and Lula Pleasant Stephenson.

A.D. was a loving husband to wife, Janet Matthews Stephenson and doting father to son, Chris. Both pre-deceased him and were the light of his life.

He proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1951-1955. He was stationed in Greenland, which he called “the North Pole”. His career included time with NC Baptist State Convention, Electric Storage Battery (making missile and torpedo batteries), retiring and ending with 25 years as a correctional officer at NC Women’s Prison in Raleigh.

A.D. is survived by sisters-in-law, Jenny G. Stephenson (Wade) and Euba Young Stephenson (David), and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and son, A.D. was pre-deceased by brothers, John B. Stephenson (Agatha), Lindsy Stephenson (May), Julian Stephenson (Rebecca), Wade Stephenson, and David Stephenson. Sisters who pre-deceased him were Pauline Guy (Norwood), Leola Stephenson, and Sue Nooney (Ray).

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, November 18th at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church in Garner. A Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM before the service. Burial will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park in Raleigh.
