Hebron, NY – Gary Edward Nims, age 69, unexpectedly passed away on January 31, 2023 at the home he loved.

Gary was born on November 23, 1953 in Glens Falls, NY, the son of the late Edward and Margaret (Green) Nims. Gary attended high school in Hudson Falls.

Afterwards, he proudly served as a flight line mechanic in the United States Air Force. He then received his Vocational Instructor Certification from St. Rose, in Albany.

He taught welding in the NYS Correctional System for 30 years and at BOCES evening program for 25 years. He retired from the NYS Dept. of Corrections in 2012. His students will long remember the knowledge he shared with them. His retirement afforded him more time to work on his “piece of heaven” in Hebron. He made a pond and other improvements to the property. There was no better way to spend his days than using his “real life” tonka toys throughout the property.

After his retirement he spent time with his sons, Chad and Adam, helping out at Nims Services where he quickly became Grandpa Gary to all.

He married Mary Ann Marschhauser, after many years together, on August 6, 2010. They had a wonderful, adventure-filled life together. They enjoyed camping, traveling and spending time with all the people they cherished. Gary was devoted to his family. He especially loved spending time with his beloved granddaughters. They had great bonding experiences while camping, fishing, and hunting. While his boys were in school, and later the granddaughters, Gary was always a proud supporter at their sporting events. They felt very blessed not only with the land and home they loved in Hebron, but with the neighborhood that came with it. He was known to the younger ones as Gare-Bear. The monthly neighborhood poker game was always a favorite.

Gary was predeceased by his parents and a brother Richard (Bonita). He is survived by his loving wife Mary Ann and his two sons Adam (Jennifer) of Hartford and Chad of Queensbury. He was blessed with five granddaughters: Alondra, Karlee, Victoria and Ava and Lillyanna (daughters of Trisha Sawyer). He was also blessed with a “bonus” granddaughter, Kaylee. He will be missed by his sisters: Kathleen Crouch (Mark) of Arizona and Karen Kelly (Charles) of Queensbury and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call on Monday, February 6, 2023 at the Robert M King Funeral Home, 23 Church St., Granville, NY from 1-3 PM and 5-7 PM.

A funeral will be held on Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at Noon at Gerald B H Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duel Rd. Schuylerville, NY 12871 with full military honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Granville Rescue Squad, POB 153, 12832Granville, NY or Wounded Warriors. To send flowers to the family or plant a tree in memory of Gary Nims, please visit Tribute Store

Livonia, NY – John M Riley has passed. Jack was born in Bennington, VT to John H. and Ruth Lavin Riley on Remembrance Day in 1951. For many years, he believed the Memorial Day parades were for him alone to celebrate his birthday.

He was raised in a loving household in Groveside, NY, where on a dirt road his father and his Uncle Bob built homes side by side.  The cousins were more like siblings than cousins.  It was somewhat a magical childhood, living out in the country and exploring the world with his cousin, Bobby.  Jack’s siblings are Kathy Riley, Bennington, VT; Tom Riley (Kristee Iacobucci), Groveside, NY; and Trish Bossong, Bennington, VT; and his cousins are Barb Gifford, Groveside, NY; Mary Jane Eddy (dec) and Bobby Ellis (dec).  He attended a one room schoolhouse down the road for a couple of years, then St. Mary’s and then public school in Hoosick Falls.

After graduating from Hoosick Falls High School, Jack attended Hudson Valley Community College and then proceeded to Oswego State University.  In his senior year, Jack met Laurie Hugenbruch and followed her home to the Rochester, NY area. They wed in 1974. He loved all his in-laws and reveled in becoming an uncle on both sides of the family.

Jack proceeded to pursue engineering degrees at RIT, culminating in a Masters in Systems Engineering.  Along the way, he worked for various companies as an engineer and after that as a consultant and college professor.  He loved being able to share real life experiences with his students.

Jack and Laurie have two children – Meghann and Patrick.  When Meg married Stephen Rose, it was an especially wonderful expansion of the family and eventually included three grandchildren:  Evelyn, Gavin and Augustus (Gus).  Jack loved his children and grandchildren immensely, nurturing all their interests, whatever they may be.  He had unique bonds with each grandchild and loved to spoil them with gifts and experiences.  Jack nurtured the leader in Evie, the scientist in Gavin and the artist in Gus.  Family dinner and family vacations were some of his favorite experiences.

Jack had a great sense of humor.  He loved to tease, joke and be good-natured trouble, encouraging his grandchildren and nieces and nephews to do the same.  Jack often wore shirts with puns for which he loved to see other people’s reaction.  Sarcasm and quick wit he passed along to his children and grandchildren.

He also gave freely of his time to volunteer in many roles either alongside his family or with his profession.  Despite never playing soccer in his youth, he learned the game and coached both his children and his grandchildren.  He was the cub scout leader of the No Fun Den.  (The NFD was named such as he made sure those boys toed the line!  Quite a few of them ended up achieving the rank of Eagle Scout.)  He was a founding member of the local chapter of INCOSE – International Council on Systems Engineering – and was a key part of coordinating their 2005 International Symposium in Rochester. Jack actively served in church leadership roles and youth groups in Irondequoit, volunteered in the Livonia Fire Department and Livonia and Lima Volunteer Ambulance Corps, among other things.

He was deeply spiritual.  His impact on others and this world is immeasurable.

When not working or volunteering he puttered around his beloved six-acre farm in South Lima, NY where the family moved from West Irondequoit  – gardening, bee keeping, wine making, wood working, bread baking, building an outdoor wood fired pizza oven, etc., etc.  Whatever he was doing outside, he made sure music was playing – mostly 60’s and 70’s.  Ask our neighbors.  He taught himself guitar and saxophone, although he could never carry a tune.  In fact, he turned on music first thing in the morning in the house, even if shortly thereafter he left to do something else.

Jack loved holidays and traditions.  He left us with an immense wealth of memories of Christmas cookie baking and tree sales, pumpkin carving at Halloween, trips to the State Fair, RIT Imagination Day, STEM camp, Easter egg hunts, first day of school photos, fireworks, bonfires and sparklers, splashing in the pool, vacation breakfasts, and playing games like UNO, Telestrations and Cribbage.

There will be a celebration of Jack’s life at the farm on a future date when spring has blossomed.  His desire is to have his ashes scattered in South Lima, Groveside, at Wrigley Field when his beloved Cubbies are playing at home, somewhere in Ireland and on a beach in Delaware where the extended family spent a week each summer for the past nine years or so.  Jack and Evie always had breakfast duty.  The past two years he had t-shirts made that said Breakfast Crew just for the two of them.

He will be – and already is – deeply missed.

The Jack Riley Memorial Fund is being established at FLCC to support the purchase of equipment for the lab at the Victor Campus where he was a professor for the past six plus years.  Donations can be made at https://www.flcc.edu/giving/ or by sending a check made out to the FLCC Foundation and sent to Finger Lakes Community College Foundation, 3325 Marvin Sands Drive, Canandaigua, NY 14424.

In either case, please note that the gift is designated for the Jack Riley Memorial Fund.

Granville, NY – Barbara Alice Varney, age 55, passed away following a brief illness at Rutland Regional Medical Center on January 19, 2023. Barbara was born on May 28, 1967, in Cambridge, NY, the daughter of the late Raymond and Florence (Martelle) Matteson.

Barbara was the loving wife of Henry Varney. She was truly the love of his life, and that’s why they were married on Valentines Day in 1992. They shared 31 amazing years together.

She was also very dedicated to her job at Granville Elementary School where she made many friends and grew especially close to some of them. Another part of her job she loved was seeing her great nieces and nephews every day and they will always remember coming into school and finding a little note and some candy on their desk from Aunt Barbara.

Barbara loved gardening and catering to her dog Teddy whom she spoiled because he was her “child”. She also enjoyed spending time with family. When she wasn’t working, she loved to go berry picking with her sister Rosie and nieces Jennifer, Nicole and Barbara. One particular time berry picking Frank was pulling Barbara and Rosie in the cart behind the four-wheeler and the cart came unhooked, tipped up and they came rolling out laughing hysterically. That was a memory they cherished and laughed often about. Barbara was very close to her family, her nieces whom she considered daughters to her, will cherish their memories forever. She loved to go to bingo with her Jenny, and coffee and conversation was always good with April, Barbara, Nicole and Jenny. The trips with Aunt Barbara and Uncle Henry to the Great Escape and many fairs, were always a wonderful time. She was there for every milestone in their lives and will be deeply missed.

She was predeceased by her parents, three brothers: Kenneth, Richard and Christopher, her sister Rose Monroe, a nephew Kenneth Matteson and a great niece Hannah Braymer.

Left to love her eternally is her husband Henry, her beloved dog Teddy, brothers Gregory Matteson of N. Granville, Raymond Matteson (Karen) of ME and step-daughter Billi Jo Rathbun (Rob) of Granville, a step-son Henry Jr , of Granville, a step granddaughter Courtney Harwood (Katelyne)of Granville, nieces April Matteson (Mike) of Whitehall, Crystal Taylor (Eric) of Whitehall, Barbara Monroe of Granville, Nicole Monroe (Ryan Hoyt) of Granville, Jennifer Braymer (Paul) of Granville, Pamela Lacelle (Brett) of NY, Valerie Daigle of VA, Sarah Matteson Fosmer of Granville, Tonya Matteson of VA, Adriana Matteson of NY and five nephews Jason Matteson (Heidi) of Granville, Jeremy Matteson of Granville, Gregory Matteson (Jessica) of TX, Andrew Matteson of NY and Joseph Monroe of Granville. Also, a longtime friend Sandra Whitney of Granville, her step-father Leroy Monroe, Jr of Granville, sister-in-law Robin Pike of Argyle and brother-in-law Frank Monroe of Granville.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 24, 2023 from 3-6 PM at the Robert M King Funeral Home, Granville, NY.

A graveside funeral service will be held in the spring when she is laid to rest in the Mettowee Valley Cemetery in Pawlet, VT. Online condolences may be made at www.robertmkingfuneralhome.com.To send flowers to the family or plant a tree in memory of Barbara Varney, please visit Tribute Store

Delmar, NY – R David (Dave) Kissinger, Ph.D., FAClinP,  of Delmar, New York, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 3, 2023, surrounded by his three children.  Born May 12, 1935, in Chicago, Illinois,  Dave was the son of the late Doris (Winegar) Kissinger and Richard D. Kissinger.  His wife of 62 years, Martha Rasch Kissinger, died in 2019.  He is survived by his three children, Lisa Kissinger of Albany, NY, Paul Kissinger of Dexter, Michigan, and Mark (Karen) Kissinger and their sons Jack and Peter Kissinger of Delmar.  He was also predeceased by his daughter-in-law Susan Kissinger.  He is survived by three nieces, a grand niece and nephew and many loving friends.

Dave earned a B.A. from the University of Michigan in 1957 with an Honors in Psychology and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Adelphi University in 1961.  Dave was the Director of Psychological and Counseling Services at Binghamton University for over 31 years.  He also had an extensive private practice for forty years and helped thousands of people.   Dave was a steady, calming presence in the life of many people, helping them to develop strength and self-acceptance.

Dave began his career as a Staff Psychologist at Fairfield Hills Hospital in Newtown, Connecticut in 1961. In 1965, he was named Director of the Counseling Center at SUNY Binghamton. Dave also held an adjunct professor position in Clinical Psychology at Binghamton.  As Director, he pioneered the use of simulations and video in training peer counselors, collaborating with the theater department and Residence Life.  Dave was always ahead of the curve with technology – designing an intake database and note-taking system in the 1980s.  He retired from Binghamton University in 1997.

Dave was a lifelong learner and a man of many talents. Dave was a 1954 graduate of Roslyn High School on Long Island, NY and while at the University of Michigan was a member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity.  He met Martha in 1954 while playing trumpet at a party at the U of M. Martha and Dave were engaged in 1956, and were married the day after their graduation in 1957.  He was a loyal Michigan alumni, always wearing maize and blue.  Dave’s love for jazz began in his young adulthood, and he continued to play the trumpet throughout his life, organizing impromptu jam sessions with his children (on the piano, sax and trombone) and with friends.  Most recently, Dave played with and arranged music for the Pacemakers. Dave was a writer, winning the prestigious Avery and Julie Hopwood Award for Fiction at the University of Michigan in 1954.  Dave was a photographer, and loved taking photographs of sunsets, flowers in Martha’s garden and Martha.  Later in life, he discovered the joys of digital art which he published on Instagram (@r.davidkissinger).  Dave also discovered an interest and talent for painting – creating abstract images and portraits. His creative pursuits through the years included stained glass making, mobiles, antiquing and teaching classes on the history of jazz.

Dave was involved in the Binghamton community as President of the Board of Directors of Planned Parenthood of Broome and Chenango Counties and chaired the Broome County Task Force to Study Mental Health Resources in Broome County.  He served as the Director of the Primary Mental Health program for the Binghamton City Schools for seven years.

In Delmar, New York, Dave served as President of the Walden Fields Homeowners Association from 2019-2020 and created the Walden Puddle during the early days of the pandemic to entertain neighbors.  Dave and Martha enjoyed many Albany Symphony concerts, jazz concerts, adult education courses, movies, plays at Cap Rep, trips to museums, reunions in Ann Arbor, Niagara on the Lake, Michigan football games, and international travel to many countries, including a 50th wedding anniversary trip to France with the family. He was also a fan of sandcastle design and construction and a good book on a Cape Hatteras beach.

A memorial gathering and celebration of Dave’s life will be held Sunday, January 29, 2023 from 1:30-4:30 PM at 60 State Place, located at 60 State Street, Albany NY.
