San Jose, California – Sandra Elizabeth Terrill November 20, 1940 – December 25, 2022
On Christmas morning, Sandra Terrill of San Jose, CA died at the age of 82.

She is survived by her four children: Lydia (spouse Colin Clancy, children Conor, Caeleigh), of San Jose Ted (daughter Britnee) of Charleston SC, Amy of San Jose, and Drew (spouse Carol, children Claire, Brendan) of Albany OR. She is also survived by her siblings, Charlo, George, and Meghan, along with Donna, Joey, and many others her parents fostered. She was preceded in death by her Father, Mother, husband David, aunts, uncles, and grandson Theodore Clifford (“Tc”).

Sandy was born to Marge and Wes Wakefield in Woodbury, NJ and enjoyed growing up at the beach in Avalon, NJ. Sandy found an early love for Jesus and most days woke up singing, usually about Jesus. She knew thousands of songs and as a teen sang in the Stroudsburg Presbyterian choir along with Fred Waring & The Pennsylvanians.

She graduated from East Stroudsburg State Teachers College with a Bachelor’s in French and also worked on her Master’s Degree at Millersville University. She taught French at several schools and later taught both French and Spanish for 20 years at Faith Christian School in Rosetta, PA. Travel during school holidays inspired her and she took memorable trips with her husband and their young children across the U.S. and Canada, South America, France, Spain and later Switzerland with her mother, Aunt Phyllis and daughter Lydia. She and her family spent very happy times volunteering at Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm, immersed in pioneer crafts.

Sandy’s other big love was her family and friends, whom she considered precious gifts from God. After 2014, Dementia made it harder for her to move and speak, but she appreciated and accepted help with a happy smile and words of encouragement. When she moved to live with her daughter Amy in 2015, she continued to learn and grow, enjoying a variety of enrichment centers and local events, making new friends wherever she went, and participating at her maximum possible level. She was happy to find Orthodoxy and was chrismated in the Greek Orthodox Church at age 75, choosing the name Sophia. She kept her sunny disposition and positive attitude to the very end, amazing many at her resilient, creative, caring nature that helped her enjoy life richly in spite of the challenges she faced. She loved to laugh, sing, praise God, and give excellent compliments and blessings.

It is with joyful sorrow that I share with you the passing of Sandy (Sophia) Terrill. November 20, 1940 – December 25, 2022

Millsboro, Deleware – Hi, my name is Bob Williams and if you are reading this, since I wrote it for my obituary, I must, as they say, be in a better place. I don’t know that, since I have never been there before. Anyway, for the past 80 years I’ve lived in a pretty good place. Sure, we had our difficulties, but the good people of the world seemed to get it straightened out each time, good luck folks.

I was born in Reading, PA in 1942. My parents, Robert and Helena did a great job raising me, my sister Kathy and my brother Tom. I graduated from Reading Central Catholic HS in 1960, spent a year at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, but decided the priesthood wasn’t for me. Graduated from Villanova University in 1965, spent 6 years in the U.S. Army Reserves and after years of some great job experiences, I finally ended up working for United Insurance Co. I was there for 20 years, met a lot of very nice people. I enjoyed my time at United. Good company, great folks and 20 wonderful years.

Forty some years ago I married Lynn. It was without a doubt the best decision I ever made. We have had a great life together and along the way had some wonderful times. I can’t begin to tell you how she took care of me the past few months. Thanks, Hon.

When we married, I inherited an instant family, Chris, Brian, and Patricia. Although I wasn’t their biological father, I really enjoyed being their dad. I enjoyed growing up with them and sharing their life and families, including Chris’s wife Kim, Brian’s wife Traci, Patty’s husband Greg, 12 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, plus my brother-in-law George, 2 nieces and a grandniece.

One thing I’m looking forward to doing is to see Mom and Dad, my granddaughter Alyssa and daughter-in-law Cassie, who left us way too soon and my buddies Truman and Rick.

Last, but definitely not least, is Riley. They say a dog’s love in unconditional, believe it. He is Lynn’s dog, but for the past 11 years he has been my best friend. A friend of mine said that if his dog can’t go to heaven, he doesn’t want to go either. That is where I’m going and when it’s Riley’s time, I’ll be waiting for him.

So, when I retired, I became a Sussex County Master Gardener, and joined the Delmarva Model RR Club. Most of my life I have volunteered with various organizations to try and help others. I was a volunteer fireman, an EMT, taught AARP defensive driving courses. I was an adult Boy Scout Instructor, earned my Eagle Badge, and with the Master Gardeners taught many people how to Garden Smart/Garden Easy. I enjoyed working in my own garden, running the White Elephant table at the RR Club, and working with my buddy Charlie, our 87-year-old president, building my own train layout and even found time to surf fish.

Now it’s time to talk about donations. Since I was a fireman in Reading, PA in the 60’s the Salvation Army has been one of my favorite group of folks. Nothing like a hot cup of coffee and a ham sandwich at 2 A.M. during a working fire. Great people. I was even a bell ringer for a few years. Please treat the Salvation Army good. Address: 22318 Sussex Hwy., Seaford, DE 19973

Now I’m not sure how to end this, I guess the Lord will take care of that. There will be a memorial service at Watson Funeral Home, 211 S Washington St., Millsboro, DE 19966 on December 3, 2022. Visitation from 12:00-1:00 PM. Service at 1:00 PM.  Chaplain Lynn Rothemich will officiate.  Inurnment will follow at Millsboro Cemetery.

I thank all of you for being my friend. Please be kind and thoughtful to each other and get lots of enjoyment out of life.

Robert Harry Smith, 88, died February 15, 2018 at the Southern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, Vermont.

Early Years

Bob was born on June 14, 1929 in Ridgefield Park, New Jersey, the son of the late George Washington Smith and Bertha Henrietta (Schmidt), stepson of the late John Robert MacDonald, preceded in death by his brother, George Smith. Bob attended Dwight Morrow High School in Englewood, New Jersey. On the local field, he was privileged to have been coached in sports and life by the emergent legendary coach Vince Lombardi, under whose tutelage he thrived not only in physical regimen, but also in skill and discipline on the chess and debating teams.

Bob left high school to serve in the US Army in Darmstadt, Hesse, Germany, returned in 1949 to acquire his diploma at Jersey City Prep, Jersey City, NJ. While in post-war Europe, he was celebrated for his prowess in baseball, football and basketball and at the same time helped to bring the US Army teams to victory.

Accomplishments

Self-described as a “peddler,” Bob worked his way up the ladder in the publishing business. He developed and grew a local New Jersey newspaper’s home delivery business, and also was a top salesman and regional manager for McGraw-Hill. With a partner in the early 1970s he created the first-ever specialty real estate magazine. After the successful sale of his business, Bob retired in 1987 as CEO of Connecticut-based Homes Magazines, a publishing company and leader in the Real Estate magazine publishing industry.

A passionate bridge player, Bob earned Gold Life Master status in 2015. His love of the game and dedication to its growth were well-known. He personally directed games in the Manchester & the Mountains area and often gave free lectures and lessons solely for the joy of promoting what he considered to be the most competitive of all games. He instituted a “guaranteed partner” policy to ensure that anyone who wanted to play would have a partner, and insisted on what he referred to as “Vermont Friendly Bridge.” At a celebration in December, 2017, local players honored Bob for the positive impact he had on bridge in Manchester.

Robert Harry Smith was an active Free Mason, raised nearly sixty years ago on April 11, 1958 at Whitehead Lodge, NJ. He affiliated Adoniram Lodge on Spruce Street in Manchester in June, 2008, and in 2009 was admitted to the Cairo Shrine of Rutland.

He settled in Vermont for skiing, stayed for the love of it. Furthermore, he was an avid gardener and golfer. He loved to dance as well as listening to jazz music. Bob collected art, drove fast cars and cherished his beloved dogs, Duke, Billie, Gunner, Oscar and Jake, and his sweet feline, Jazzmine.

Survivors

Bob is survived by his wife, Patricia Lorenzo, whom, no matter how long they were married, he referred to as “his bride.” He also leaves behind his sisters Marylou Oser (Gustav) and Gloria Anderson (William); his daughter, Roberta Lee Vries (Norman) and his son, Karter Craig Smith (Deborah), his grandsons Garrison Smith and Evan Smith, his step-children, Erin O’Brien Swain (Michael), and retired Lt. Cmdr. USN Brendan T. O’Brien (Alisa), his bonus grand-children, Colin O’Brien, Aidan O’Brien, Liam O’Brien, E. Patrick Swain, Mary Catherine Swain, Gerald Vries and Norwin Vries, and also his many nieces and nephews. Bob also leaves behind an extended family that includes his wife’s sister, Adrianne Colosi (James) in addition to brothers Paul Lorenzo (Karin) and Richard Lorenzo (Dawn).

Family and friends will gather mid-summer for a memorial celebration of the life of Robert Harry Smith. Gifts in his memory may be made to the The ALS Association Northern New England Chapter, webnne.alsa.org.
