Now, almost no one has heard of grape pie here in the Hudson Valley, but to my surprise Joe had and said it was one of his favorite pies. So, of course, I went home and brought back grape pie for my cousin, Joe. I know it may seem a trivial memory, but I had not seen Joe in many years and he was so welcoming, loving and funny and grateful even for grape pie. Such a talented artist, a kind and gentle spirit (like his parents and brother) and a great wit. He will remain in our memories.

Joe always lit up a room with his presence. Heads turned as he strode down a street…he just had great style and panache. He was very much loved by his family and especially by his mother, my aunt Virginia DiStefano. We would love having Joe home for a visit and meals at her house became a gathering place to hear his stories after he invariably rose late and joined us in his silk robe. I miss Joe and though there will be no more visits or telephone calls, he lives in my heart and those of many others that he loved and that loved him. We always knew he was in good company with Diane and his life with her made him happy and whole. He was also proud of Christian and his accomplishments and loved his grandchildren. We miss you Joe.
