Publishing an obituary in a newspaper remains a cherished tradition for many families, serving as a public announcement of a loved one’s passing and a way to share details about their life, funeral services, and survivors. However, the costs can add unexpected financial strain during an already difficult time. As of December 2025, prices vary dramatically based on the newspaper’s size, circulation, and location.

Local vs. Major Newspapers

Local papers, serving smaller communities or regional areas, typically offer the most affordable options. Basic notices in small-town or suburban publications often start around $200–$400 for a short text-only obituary running one day. These rates reflect lower circulation and printing costs, making them accessible for families notifying nearby friends and relatives. In some smaller markets, very brief death notices (just name, dates, and service info) might even be free or under $100, though full obituaries with biographical details push into the higher end of that range.

In contrast, major metropolitan or national newspapers charge significantly more due to higher production expenses, larger audiences, and prestige. For instance, the Los Angeles Times averages $1,000–$1,500 for a standard obituary, with basic placements starting around $205 but escalating quickly. The New York Times begins at about $263 for the first few lines, plus $50+ per additional line, easily surpassing $1,000 for anything detailed. The Wall Street Journal can exceed $1,000 for national runs, with regional options starting lower around $200. These premium papers treat obituaries as paid classifieds, charging per line, inch, or column—often resulting in bills that shock grieving families.

Additional Costs: Photos and Extras

Want to include a photo? That’s an extra layer of expense. Adding a black-and-white or color image typically costs $25–$250, depending on size, quality, and the paper—smaller local ones on the lower end, big-city publications pushing toward the higher. Color photos, larger formats, or multiple images drive prices up further. Running the obituary on premium days (like Sundays) or for multiple days also multiplies the total, sometimes doubling or tripling the base rate.

Why are these costs so high? Newspapers have faced declining print readership and advertising revenue for decades, leading many to monetize obituary sections aggressively. What was once a community service is now a revenue stream, charged like ads. Average U.S. newspaper obituaries in 2025 fall around $200–$500 overall, but longer tributes in urban areas routinely hit $800+.

Emotional and Practical Burden

Who wants to haggle over line counts, photo fees, or deadlines while navigating profound grief? Families often feel pressured to keep obituaries short to control costs, sacrificing heartfelt stories about a loved one’s achievements, quirks, or legacy. This can feel like commodifying a final tribute, adding emotional weight to an already overwhelming process.

Affordable Alternatives: Online Options

Fortunately, modern alternatives exist that are far more affordable and flexible. Online obituaries on dedicated platforms or funeral home sites often cost $50–$100 (or even free in basic forms), with no word limits, unlimited photos, videos, or guestbooks for condolences. These digital tributes reach wider audiences via social media shares, remain permanently accessible, and allow edits anytime. Many newspapers now include online versions with print placements at little extra cost, or families opt for online-only to save hundreds.

Recommendation

Why burden yourself with inflated newspaper fees during such a vulnerable time? Explore user-friendly online options that honor your loved one fully without the financial sting. Hit up this page and see what it really costs for you here—you’ll likely find a compassionate, cost-effective solution that lets you focus on celebrating a life well-lived, not counting characters and worrying about your wallet, purse, or another credit card bill.

Bobby Sherman, a singer and actor who became a quintessential teen idol of the late 1960s and early ’70s, died Tuesday at 81.

His wife, Brigette Poublon Sherman, had announced three months ago that he had been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.

In posting the news of his death to Instagram Tuesday morning, Poublon Sherman wrote, “It is with the heaviest heart that I share the passing of my beloved husband, Bobby Sherman. Bobby left this world holding my hand — just as he held up our life with love, courage, and unwavering grace through all 29 beautiful years of marriage. I was his Cinderella, and he was my prince charming. Even in his final days, he stayed strong for me. That’s who Bobby was—brave, gentle, and full of light.”

Sherman came to fame as a regular for two seasons on the ABC series “Here Come the Brides” in 1968-1970 and quickly parlayed that into an even bigger career as a singing star. Sherman was especially beloved by adolescent and pre-teen girls for his hit singles and tv appearances, coming to be literally the poster boy for the power of bubblegum music for a few years. With his suitable-for-wall-pasting photo spreads in magazines like Tiger Beat and 16, Sherman was rivaled only by Donny Osmond and David Cassidy in his power to mesmerize with his soothing voice and cuddly good looks.

At his peak, in 1969-70, he had four singles reach the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 and achieve gold-selling status: “Little Woman” (No. 3), “La La La (If I Had You)” (No. 9), “Easy Come, Easy Go” (No. 9) and perhaps his best-known song, or the one most likely to be spontaneously belted out by fans of a certain age, “Julie, Do Ya Love Me” (No. 5).

In Brigette’s media message, she added: “He lived with integrity, gave without hesitation, and loved with his whole heart. And though our family feels his loss profoundly, we also feel the warmth of his legacy — his voice, his laughter, his music, his mission. Thank you to every fan who ever sang along, who ever wrote a letter, who ever sent love his way. He felt it.”

WYNANTSKILL – Jill Suzanne Bryce, 63, was set free February 27, 2025, gently and peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved daughter of Wally and Marlene Bryce of Averill Park; and was married to the love of her life, Thomas Weiss.
Jill met Tom on the Adirondack ski slopes, and they spent their years skiing, sailing and traveling together. Jill enjoyed adventures with the Out of Control Ski Club, and she and Tom were proud members of the Jiminy Peak Ski Patrol. They also assisted skiers at the Double H Ranch, and Jill helped start the Andrew Christian Bryce Foundation, both efforts that helped young people with illnesses enjoy their lives.
Jill was a graduate of The Doane Stuart School and Union College. After earning her bachelor’s degree in English and political science, she began her 20-plus year reporting career for the Troy Record and The Daily Gazette. She won an Associated Press award for beat reporting in 2004. She never put down her pen, writing poems, plays and stories while also working for her family’s Real Estate.
She loved to slam a tennis volley, sail in strong winds with her Tommy Boy, ski narrow glades, win ski races, even conquer the Matterhorn. Jill loved to throw a party and was always the life of the party. Never shy, she danced with an ’80s flair, sang out of tune, golfed, visited friends, chatted on the phone late into the night, and attended church, concerts and plays.
In addition to her parents, and devoted husband, she is survived by sisters, Kyle Bryce Batease (Glenn) of Queensbury, Susan McGuire (Thomas) of Weston, Fla., and Jennifer Leonard (Michael) of Reading, Mass.; and a brother, David Bryce (Astri) of Troy.
Also surviving are stepson, Russell Weiss (Kate) of E. Arbury, New South Wales, Australia; along with the nieces and nephews that brought her so much joy: Heavenly godson, Andrew; Kristjan, Axel, David (Nina), Anna, Thomas, Bryce (Alex), Wallis, Owen; her godson, Ian; Emma and Penelope. Her grandchildren, Millie, Isabelle and Will, will also miss her.
Jill leaves her favorite canine friend, Kayla; along with her signature collection of hats, ski vests and jackets. Her numerous friends that became like family are too numerous to list. She was predeceased by grandparents, Esther and Denton Bryce and Elizabeth and Joseph Wiesenforth.
Faced with the thief called cancer, she helped frontier immunotherapy and always made an effort to bring joy and comfort to others.
Her strong faith, her devoted husband, and her family carried her through precious, extra years. Cancer be not proud; you are not her whole story.
“Leave them with a smile,” she would say, (so go ahead and put the windows down and belt out a song or two for Jill).
We remember the joy and are thankful for it. In Peace I will lie down and Sleep for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.
Relatives and friends may call at Bryce Funeral Home Inc., 276 Pawling Ave., Troy, on Monday, March 3, from 4 to 7 p.m.
Funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 4, at 10:00 a.m., at Brunswick Church, 42 White Church Lane, Troy, with Rev. Jim Knapp officiating.
Interment will be in Brookside Cemetery in Brunswick.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Jill S. Bryce to The Community Hospice (Gift Processing Center), 310 S. Manning Blvd., Albany, N.Y. 12208, or the Center for Melanoma Oncology, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, 450 Brookline Ave., Boston, Mass. 02215.

Brunswick, NY- Gene H Senecal of Brunswick, passed away peacefully in his new home on the hill surrounded by his family and beloved grand-dogs on Thursday, February 13, 2025. Gene was born in Troy, New York, on December 4, 1942, to the late Eugene and Florence (Richardson) Senecal.  In 1960, Gene graduated from Lansingburgh High School.  He then carried onto Castleton University for his Bachelors Degree in English.  Shortly after graduation, he was hired at Tamarac High School to teach English and film studies, which he enjoyed for the next 31 years.  He became one of the most popular campus personalities and a favorite “adult” role model.  Gene always appreciated the occasions his students would visit the old Hall Road Farm and spend time swapping stories, fishing, hunting, and painting. Gene, also known by most as “Geno, The Pencil Neck Geek or Turtle,” was a family man as well.

He married the late Carolyn E. Senecal (Miller) on Woodstock weekend in 1969.  She was the love of his life for the next 43 years.  They built their dream on a 20-acre farm on Hall Road in Pittstown, where they then were surprised with a beautiful baby girl, Hillary Senecal in 1983.  She became the apple of Dad’s eye for the next 41 years.  During their time at “the farm,” the trio raised Morgan horses, built bass ponds, mowed a lot…. And they truly enjoyed spending time with friends and family.
During the last few years, Gene moved to a bigger “farm” with his daughter and son-in-law, Ryan.  He still enjoyed reading his books and his crosswords and keeping up with his favorite Red Sox.  To his delight, with his brother and dear friends, he was still able to make his weekly trips to his favorite “watering holes,” Man of Kent and Giuseppe’s, where the bartenders would have the beers waiting!

Gene is survived by his daughter and son-in- law, Hillary Senecal and Ryan Fornango, his brother and sister-in-law, Lance and Nora Senecal, nephew, Lance K. Senecal, nephew and wife, Robert and Kimberly Kissinger, and their children, Olivia and Dylan Kissinger.  In addition to his parents and wife, Carolyn, he was predeceased by a nephew, the late Nolan Senecal.

Relatives and friends are invited to call on Monday, February 17, 2025, from 3:00-6:00 p.m. at the Howard B. Tate & Son Funeral Home, Inc., 2237 NY Route 7, located in Raymertown, with a short service to follow at 6:15 p.m.  Burial will take place later this spring at Eagle Mills Cemetery in Brunswick.

The Senecal Family wishes to extend their most heartfelt appreciation to caregivers Leslie Shinkman and Larissa Forette for their exceptional care and compassion over the past year.

In memorium and as a way to honor Gene’s love of his many four-legged friends, please feel free to make any donations to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, 3 Oakland Avenue, Menands, NY 12203, or enjoy a nice cold Pale Ale with a friend.
